Newsflash

Foster homes needed!

Have you ever considered opening your home to help out a rescue dog? It is very rewarding and you are helping to save lives! Our foster dogs are not kept in kennels, but in actual homes. Please contact us if you are interested in fostering! If you are unsure, please read this poem...

Donations needed!

To help Fresh Start Sheltie Rescue you can make a tax-deductible donation via a PayPay donation to freshstartsheltierescue@yahoo.com. Additionally, you can contact Kim to get a physical address to send a donation to as well.  Additionally you can click the ChipIn link to the right to make a donation for three of our current rescued dogs (Shelby, Chance, and Smokey) who are heartworm positive.  Each of them will be undergoing heartworm treatments to make them healthy again.

We, and the rescues, thank you in advance for anything you can send.

Interested in Adopting?

  • Please visit our Adoption Info page for more information. We are looking to adopt where there is a securely fenced yard for the safety and welfare of the dogs. Only rarely do we consider other options to a fenced yard. We do not adopt to homes that use invisible/underground fencing. This is for the safety of the dog - even though the dog may not be able to get out, that doesn't mean other dogs/animals can't get in!!
  • Also, please make sure that you are wanting a rescue that you are going to keep as an inside family member. Potential adopters that want a Sheltie as an outdoor dog are automatically declined. Again, this is for the safety of the rescue. Weather can turn and you wouldn't want to be all alone outside during a storm, would you??

If I find a dog that I like, what is the adoption process?

The first step is to fill out an adoption application. After we receive your completed application and review it, then we contact your vet to check that your other pets are current on vaccinations, on heartworm prevention, etc. Then we will contact you to set up a time for someone to visit your home to meet you and your family. Once you have been approved, we will contact you to discuss which dog might best fit your family and lifestyle. To obtain an application, please request additional information via email.

Madison is a sable-colored female that's somewhere between 5 and 8 years old.  She was shaved, but her coat will be growing back.  She's slightly overweight, but her foster mom is working on getting her down to a normal weight.

China

6/7/10 - China is a tiny Sheltie - she's a sable female weighing only 9.5lbs! She's a little shy, as she lived her life in a puppy mill. She's learning to live inside, and is about 6 years old. She came in with Muffin, and she will need to get her teeth cleaned and spayed, then she will be ready for adoption. She is a little shy, but likes to take treats from your hand. She is working on housebreaking, and has had all her shots and heartworm preventative.

William-Snow-small WilliamSofa

William is an approximately 2 year old sable male. He came from a puppymill seizure (click here for the news story and there is also a video on the site).  He is working on socialization, and has attended obedience classes to learn how to live in the "real" world outside the puppy mill.  Once William is properly socialized, he will be available for adoption.

Update 5/16/10: William is now welcoming dogs, visitors, and his foster dad at the front door when they arrive.  He's also fallen into being a true member of his "pack" by barking and pawing for attention as well as appropriately letting his foster sister know it's not okay to step on him.  On occasion William's even taken the initiative to "steal" toys from his siblings.  He's made a noticeable amount of social progress in the last few months.

Update 3/26/10: William is getting more playful and is still shy, but doing better.   He would do well in a home with another dog, one that is not shy and loves to play.  If you have experience with shy dogs or have rescued a Sheltie like William before, please contact us for more details.

Update 3/10/10: William is learning to play with other dogs and is slowly coming out of his shell.  He willingly runs to "his spot" on the couch.  When his foster-siblings start playing his ears perk up, and he gradually joins in with a little bit of "tug" and chase.  He's still shy, and loud noises (other than his own playful bark) are scary things.

William seems to prefer men - he is doing really well at his foster dad's house, and is actually starting to play inside! He should go to a home with other dogs, since he likes to run and play.  He would do best in a family that understands shy Shelties, and is willing to continue working with him to overcome his shyness.   He is a very sweet boy, and wants to be brave but just isn't quite sure how.  With the right situation, he'll do very well and be a loving companion!

7/22/2010:

Pete was recently rescued from a puppymill. He's still shy and will need some help learning to socialize with other people and dogs. He'll be getting neutered within the next week and will be on hold for a bit to get healed and socialized.
